Fir Meadow has an herbal copper/selenium supplement (Kop/Sel) that works very well for me.
I feed 1 1/2 tsp once a day in their grain mix until I see the deficiency signs go away. When this happens, I plan to feed 1 1/2 tsp per WEEK and reevaluate. I feel that this is an excellent option for minerals.
Here is what I do:
Feed alfalfa (King of Herbs!) free choice or 4# of hay per milker per day (if they clean it all up, then you should feed a bit more hay. Ideally, you should see a bit left in their hay feeder - this shows that they are not hungrey and that you are feeding the perfect amount for your goats. They shouldn't be throwing a lot on the ground either. If they are, you may be feeding too much, or the hay is not a good quality for them. I used to feed 2nd cutting alfalfa, but it was stemmy and they didn't like the stems, so they threw them on the ground. I switched to 3rd cutting alfalfa - less stemmy - and they eat it all up now.)
Free choice kelp, and Kop/Sel daily in their feed right now.
If you want to free choice feed Kop-Sel, you mix 1 cup of the Kop-Sel into 1# of kelp.
This should cover your goat's mineral needs.
If this sounds good to you, go to www.firmeadow.com, tell Kat I sent ya. ;)
I DO take an "herbal sabbath" once a week, when I don't feed any herbs at all that whole day - it helps the herbs work better when the body gets that break.
BTW, curious what's in those herbs? This is the herb research website that I'm using for my own research. :) Happy researching!! http://www.ars-grin.gov/duke/.
